PENSACOLA, Fla. - Despite coming up short in the NCAA Division II tournament, the University of West Florida's men soccer team was recently honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, with two All-American selections. Senior striker Jimmy McHenry garnered first team honors, while teammate Juan Garcia earned third team honors. McHenry and Garcia were a large part of a team record 18 straight wins this season, and a team ranking as high as third in the nation, going into the post-season.
During his brief stint at West Florida, McHenry placed his named in the West Florida and Gulf South Conference record books. This season McHenry racked up 19 goals, nine assists and 47 points, which are all amongst the best outputs by an Argonaut during a single season. The Tallahassee, Fla. native's 19 goals this season was the second highest total in the conference, and ranks fourth in UWF and tenth in GSC history. The 45 points the speedy forward tallied this season is also fourth the fourth best single season output by an Argonaut and eighth in conference history.
For his career, McHenry played just 37 matches during in two years as an Argo, but finishes sixth in school history with 29 career goals and 78 career points and fifth in the West Florida record book with 20 career assists. However, McHenry's best statistic may be his 0.95 goals per game average, which is second in school history and fifth in GSC's annals of history.
Like his teammate, Garcia also takes his place in West Florida lore, as his 0.72 goals against average and 8 shutouts this season are both all-time West Florida records and rank second and third, respectively, in GSC single season history. The Bogota, Columbia native has broken the records for shutout with 12, and looks to finish his time at UWF by maintaining or bettering his career 0.74 goals against average, which is both a school and conference record. During a 42 match career at West Florida, the junior keeper has a record of 30-2-3 and has accumulated 142 saves.
Head Coach Bill Elliott was proud of his players being selected, "It was good to see them get recognized, they are both very deserving, and were very important for our team success this year. With Juan (Garcia) and Jimmy (McHenry), you can just look at the stats and see how good they are, and yes they are great at what they do." All-Americans for now, but forever etched in the UWF and GSC Men's Soccer record books.
