Oct. 28, 2007

Box Score

Pensacola, Fla. - West Florida (16-1-0) concluded their 2007 regular season with a 2-0 triumph over NAIA foe Thomas University (4-12-0) Friday night at the UWF Sports Complex, making the school record now 16 straight victories. Keith Savage shined on senior night as he picked up a goal and his 24th assist of his career in the Argonauts triumph.

In the first half, West Florida out shot Thomas 9-2 but were unable to find the back of the net as the team would go into the break tied at 0. The Nighthawks would begin to find their attack in the second half as both teams fired up eight shots in the final 45 minutes. However, it was the Argonauts that made the best of their offensive strikes scoring twice in the half.

Five minutes in, Savage picked up the first goal of the game off of a corner kick. Jay Mainville sent in the cross and a couple of Argonauts got a piece of the ball before Savage tucked away his 14th goal of the season.

West Florida was able to put a buffer on their lead in the 78th minute. Juan Garcia sent a long ball into Thomas territory and Savage was able to corral the ball on the run. The senior carried the ball into the box drawing the defense and goal keeper towards him before dishing the ball to Rohan Culley for his first career goal as an Argonaut. For Savage the assist places him one shy of the career record set by Pat Cannon (1998-2001).

West Florida will now partake in the Gulf South Conference Championship as the top seeded team in the tournament, which is held at Brosnaham Park located in Pensacola. The Argonauts will take on the fourth seeded Harding Bisons in the first round of the tournament with kick off scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday.
