CLEVELAND, Miss. - In their final road trip of the regular season, fifth-ranked West Florida (13-1-0, 5-0-0 GSC) rolled to their eighth straight road win, a new school record, with a 4-1 triumph over Delta State Sunday afternoon at Delta Field in Cleveland, Miss. It was the same score the Argonauts beat the Statesmen by last season.
The Argonauts cracked the score board first with a goal in the 12th minute of action. A nice pass down the side line from Rafael Segal found Nolan Intermoia in the corner. The junior defender quickly crossed the ball to Patrick McLean who tucked away his first goal of the season.
The Statesmen would even the score 15 minutes later on a perfectly placed corner kick by Kevin Marchi that was finished by Steve Axe.
Six minutes before the half, West Florida would retake the lead on a Jimmy McHenry goal. Ben Woodland sent a cross to the back post and McHenry was able to control the pass inside the box before finishing, giving West Florida a 2-1 lead at the break.
One-and-a-half minutes into the second half the Argonauts extended their lead after Intermoia gathered a rebounded shot and centered the ball to Jay Mainville for his fifth goal of the season.
West Florida added an insurance goal in the 61st minute of action when Keith Savage crossed the ball from the corner to McHenry who sent his volley shot over the keeper head for his team leading 13th goal of the season. It was Savage's 23 assist of his West Florida career tying him for second in school history with Jose Fernandez (1990-1993).
The Argonauts have not lost since the season opening fixture, a streak of 13 matches, tying a school record set last season. Up next for West Florida is Spring Hill College on homecoming night this Friday. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and "Live Stats" will be available for fans to follow.
