PENSACOLA, Fla. - No. 11 West Florida (10-1-0) scored early in the match and held the one goal lead as they edged William Carey (6-9-0), 1-0, Thursday night at the UWF Sports Complex. It is the Argonuats tenth-straight win three shy of the school record, which was set last year.
The Argonauts picked up a quick goal in the fifth minute of action when Nick Mroczkowski hooked the ball into the box for Jimmy McHenry who headed the ball past the keeper. It was McHenry's team leading tenth goal and 25th point of the season. The senior now has 58 career points placing him in the top ten of Argonaut history.
West Florida would have other opportunities in the first half to increase their lead but were unable to finish several good scoring chances, out shooting the Crusaders 11-3 in the half, and would take a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half was much of the same as West Florida along with William Carey would continue to have openings to tally more points but both teams came up short in 16 combined second half shots. In the 63rd minute, William Carey nearly evened the score when Jared Wooley's shot hit the inside of the Argonauts goal post before ricocheting back out.
It was the Argonauts sixth and Juan Garcia's fourth shut out of the season. Garcia grabbed two saves in the win giving him 112 saves in his West Florida career fourth in school history.
