PALM HARBOR, Fla. - With a two-stroke lead heading into the final round of the 90th Florida State Amateur Championships on Sunday, senior Matthew Galloway held on to claim the championship title. Galloway finished with a four-under par 280 to win the title by two strokes at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.
"This win means a lot," said Galloway. "There are a lot of good names on that trophy and it's awesome to see mine added to it."
Galloway had posted scores of 69, 70 and 70 over the first three rounds to claim a two-stroke lead after Saturday's third round. He shot even par (71) on Sunday, including consecutive birdies on the third and fourth holes.
"After the first round, I was surprised to break par," said Galloway. "I spoke with my coach (Steve Fell) who gave me some good advice and the confidence that I needed."
Galloway received a crystal vase with his name inscribed on the Clarence Camp Championship Trophy. He will also receive an exemption to next year's Florida State Amateur Championship.
Galloway will have the opportunity to win additional awards over the next two weeks. He is in the running for the Gulf South Conference Commissioner's Trophy which will be announced on Thursday. Galloway will also participate in the 107th North & South Amateur Championship from July 2-8 at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C.
