May 5, 2008

AUSTIN, Tex. - The #1 ranked Argos shot a five under par, 279 during the first round at the Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin, Texas on Monday, to end the day tied for the lead with #4 Florida Southern. The stacked South Region has five teams ranked in the top 10, and one of the five teams is guaranteed to miss the trip to the National Championships next week in Houston, Texas.

Fifth ranked Nova Southeastern is in third place with an even par 284, while 10th ranked Lynn is tied for fifth place with Barry University at eight over par, and 8th ranked Valdosta State is sitting in 7th place after day one with an 11 over par score. Round two is Tuesday, with the final round of the 54 hole tournament on Wednesday.

The Argos Kyle Scott and Tobias Rosendahl both carded four under par, 67's for the first round to end the day tied for second best. Florida Southern's Jude Eustaquio is the individual leader with a seven under par for the first round on the 6,805 yard, par 71 course. Matthew Galloway has the Argos third best score of one over par 72, which is tied for 14th best. Meanwhile, Federico Damus is two over par, which is tied for 28th best, and teammate Otto Bonning is five over par, which is tied for 34th best, to round out UWF's scoring.

The top team from each region within the super regional and the top individual not with an advancing team from each super regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 14-17 at the Division II Spring National Championships Festival in Houston, Texas. The finals will be hosted by Rice University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority. Ten additional teams will earn berths to the finals. These teams will be determined based on the previous three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super regional at the finals. For the 2008 championships, the additional selections will include three teams from the South/South Central Region, for a maximum of five teams to advance. Thru round one, St. Edwards leads the South Central region by a large margin, and through the first round, the remaining three at large selections would come from the South Region, at this point.
