HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Top ranked West Florida successfully defended their GSC Men's Golf Championship today by outlasting the 13 team field through 54 holes. The conference title marks the eighth for Steve Fell's UWF men's golf program. Fell holds the record for most GSC Championships. The Argos have won three tournament titles this 2006-07 season.
West Florida shot an 859 (287-286-286) for the championship. They defeated 19th ranked Valdosta State who shot an 868, and 23rd ranked Arkansas Tech who shot an 869. Tenth ranked North Alabama shot an 875 to finish fourth. West Florida was 16 shots off the pace. They were in second through two rounds, and just one shot behind UWF.
David Lingmerth (Tranas, Sweden) finished in a tie for third place with Ben Cuzen of Henderson State. He shot a 212, -4 (70-73-69). Matthew Galloway (Valrico, Fla. / Durant HS) finished seventh with a 215, -1 (70-73-72). Matthew Berzovich (Longwood, Fla. / Lake Brantley HS) finished in a tie for eighth with Nelson Alvarez of West Georgia. He shot a 217, +1 (74-70-73). Federico Damus (Posadas, Argentina) shot a 219, +3 (73-70-76). Damus finished in a tie for 11th. Leonardo Di Marino finished the tournament in 17th with a 221, +5 (75-74-72).
The tournament was held at the par 72, 6,690 yard Hot Springs Country Club course in Hot Springs, Ark. West Florida prepares for the NCAA II South Regionals on May 7-9 at The Shoals' Fighting Joe Course in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
