Kenny Holmes Named GSC Player of the Week

Dec. 13, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - West Florida guard/forward Kenny Holmes was named the Gulf South Conference East Division Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending December 11th. The hustling wing player was all over the court as he helped the Argonauts win two straight to improve to 4-3 on the season. His trademark is getting offensive rebounds, and he had 10 offensive rebounds in the two games to go along with five steals.

Holmes, a 6-5 junior from Slidell, La., earned his first-ever player of the week accolade, by leading UWF to a pair of victories over Columbus State. In the two contests, he averaged 20.5 points and 15.5 rebounds in 33.5 minutes of action. He also shot 52.0 percent from the floor and 87.5 percent from the foul line.

Kenny began the week, collecting his first double-double of the season in a 70-63 home win over CSU. Holmes led all players with 22 points and 17 rebounds, while also dishing out five assists in 33 minutes. The scrappy talented leaper completed the week by leading West Florida to a 74-64 win at Columbus State. Holmes posted his second straight double-double (19 points, 14 rebounds), scoring 15 of the team's 27 points in the first half.

Coach Don Hogan was excited about the award, "Kenny had a great week, he is getting rid of the rust from being inactive last year with injuries. He continues to please us with his effort and leadership, and we look forward to his continued outstanding play." Holmes played in only five games last year, and not at full strength, and then finally had to redshirt due to injury. So far this year, he is making the most of his opportunity to play, as he leads the team and the entire conference in rebounding with 9.9 per game. He is also leading the team with 17 steals, and is second on the team in scoring, at 11.4 per game.
