PENSACOLA, Fla. - Joe Eatmon mis-fired on a three-pointer from the wing that would have tied the game with five seconds left to play, and West Florida held on for their first conference win since the GSC opener against West Georgia on Jan. 6. West Florida prevailed, 85-81, behind the play of seniors Barry Durosier and Marcus Grant.
Durosier scored a game high 28 points with eight rebounds. He was 9-for-9 from the line. Marcus Grant played his last game in Pensacola and cashed in a money performance. He scored 16 points with 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Daniel Alcorn scored 16 points, while Deondre Boynton had 15 points and nine assists. West Florida shot 51.0 percent from the field, and 11-for-18 from three-point range.
West Alabama was led by Stan Gill's 26 points and 16 rebounds. Eatmon added 18 points, and four three's. The Tigers were just 11-for-34 from behind the arc.
West Florida looked like they would run away with it when their lead reached 19 points at 70-51 with 9:05 left to play. West Alabama came roaring back. The Tigers outscored the Argos, 26-7, over the next 6:19 to tie the game at 77-77 with 2:46 left to play.
Durosier made a pair of free throws, and Grant nailed a jumper to put UWF on top by four with 1:41 left to play. Gill was fouled shooting and hit both of his free throws at the 1:27 mark. At the other end, Andy Beauchamp was fouled, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. Raymond Shaw pulled down the rebound, but Grant stole the ball away. The steal was Grant's 60th of the season, breaking his own UWF single-season record of 59 he set a year ago. Alcorn drained a three from the top of the key to give UWF an 84-79 lead with 35 seconds left.
The Tigers were not finished, as Beauchamp fouled out when he got a piece of Shaw shooting. Shaw hit both free throws, and UWA trailed by three. The Argos broke the Tigers full court pressure, and Boynton was fouled. He missed the front end of a one-and-one, which gave West Alabama a chance to tie the game, but Eatmon missed an uncontested three from the wing in transition. Alcorn grabbed the rebound, and was fouled. He made one-of-two to seal the win.
The Argonauts led, 42-31 at halftime. They took advantage of their free throws in the first half by making 15-of-19. The Tigers shot just 37.0 percent in the first half.
West Florida plays their final game of the season this Saturday at Valdosta State at 7:00 pm CST. Listen to the game live on Stretch Internet at goargos.com.
