PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville (15-7, 4-4) executed their Princeton offense perfectly tonight and handed West Florida (8-13, 1-7) their eighth consecutive loss, 80-61. Twelve three-pointers and a 54.2 shooting percentage doomed the Argos.
West Florida threw every defense imaginable at UAH tonight to no avail. Point guard Jason Smith received little resistance, and scored a game high 28 points, including 5-for-9 shooting from behind the arc. He also added eight assists and four steals. Casey Stafford was also 5-for-9 from three-point range, and scored 18 points with eight rebounds.
West Florida's Barry Durosier received little assistance tonight offensively. He led UWF with 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Marcus Grant had nine points with six boards and four steals. Deondre Boynton and Daniel Alcorn each scored eight points. The Argos were just 4-for-18 from long range.
The Chargers scored at the first half buzzer to give them a 37-30 lead at halftime. That basket was part of a 16-3 run put on by UAH that extended deep into the second half. West Florida trailed 51-33 with 13.32 remaining. A deficit they never fully rebounded from. The Argos got as close as 10 points at 54-44 at the 8:55 mark, but UAH went on a quick 9-0 run to put the game away.
A poor start hurt UWF's chances against the disciplined UAH team. The Chargers led 19-7 with 13:11 left to play in the first half. West Florida played their best defense during the later part of the first half to help UWF stay close.
West Florida looks to snap their losing streak on Thursday in Hattiesburg, Miss. against NAIA school William Carey University at 7:30 pm. The Argos defeated Williams Carey at home on November 25, 85-69.
