West Florida Drops Series to Alabama-Huntsville

April 15, 2007

Box Score

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - After West Florida (32-14, 8-7 GSC) and Alabama-Huntsville (19-24, 3-9 GSC) combined to average 17.5 hits per game in the first two games of the three-game series, pitchers ruled the final game of the series keeping both team to a combined five hits. Unfortunately, it was the Chargers that were able to pick up the unearned run en route to the 1-0 victory over the Argonauts in the second game of Sunday's double header at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Ala.

Alabama-Huntsville's starting pitcher Tom Longyear (3-4) went the distance in the seven inning affair and did not allow a run. Longyear allowed only one Argonaut runner to reach third base. He surrendered only three hits, one walk and struck out four.

Jordan Berry (Bradenton, Fla./ Central Florida CC) got the start for the Argonauts and went 3 and 1/3 innings, giving up only the one run although it was unearned. Berry (2-3) allowed two hits, struck out one batter and walked two.

Phil Lawhorn (Virginia Beach, Va./ Pensacola Junior CC) worked the final 2 and 2/3 innings for the Argonauts and did not allowed a single base runner.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom half of the second inning. With one out Will Evans reached on an Argonaut fielding error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Will Stagger's RBI double down the leftfield line drove in Evans giving the Chargers and Longyear the 1-0 lead.

With the victory, Alabama-Huntsville claims the series win, 2-1, over West Florida, and leaves the Argonauts in a fight for the fourth spot in the Gulf South Conference East Division. The top four teams in both the GSC East and West will earn a bid to play in the GSC Tournament.

West Florida will not play another GSC game until their final series against Valdosta State on April 28. The Argonauts will play next on Wednesday against NAIA Auburn-Montgomery, a team which beat them 18-5 earlier this season. The game will be played at Pelican Park on the UWF campus and is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
