PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida (25-10) looked strong in the first game of a three game set with GSC West school Arkansas Tech (16-19-1). The Argonauts dominated the Wonder Boys from the outset by pounding out 12 hits through seven innings. Peter Antoske had a monster game by going 3-for-4 with five RBI, a double and two runs scored.
West Florida took control in the second inning by scoring five runs. Jacob Whisenhunt singled to left field and Lee Huggins singled to right field to get things started for UWF. Jon Reed flew out to deep left field. Whisenhunt and Huggins advanced to second and third on an errant relay throw by shortstop Tony Sanchez. Jason Kohl walked off ATU starter Cody Taylor to load the bases.
Antoske broke the game open with a bases clearing double to give UWF a 3-0 lead. The Argos were not finished. Kyle DeBos was hit by a pitch. Taylor got Bo Williams to pop out in foul territory for the second out. A wild pitch put two runners in scoring position. Clay Wallace ripped a single to right field scoring both runs and UWF led, 5-0. That was the end of Taylor, as ATU summoned Haydon Arnold from the bullpen.
Sanchez singled to center field with out in the third inning. Jantzen Black singled through the right side, and Josh Govan was hit by a pitch to load the bases. West Florida starter Jordan Berry walked Dario Colovic and Sanchez scored from third. Berry retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
The Argos picked up where they left off from in the second inning. Huggins led off with a walk, and Reed, Kohl and Antoske all singled to put UWF on top, 8-1. Kohl's single scored one run and Antoske's base hit scored two.
West Florida continued the onslaught in the fifth inning. Antoske led off with a single to left field. He advanced to second on a hit run ground out by Kyle DeBos. Williams singled through the left side putting runners at the corners. Antoske scored on a Wallace base hit to right, spelling the end of Arnold in favor of Bryan Bachman, who forced a double play.
In the sixth inning, UWF loaded the bases. Whisenhunt singled through the right side. Huggins was hit by a pitch and Reed walked. After Kohl popped out, pinch hitter Logan Whitley walked scoring Whisenhunt.
Berry (2-1) pitched a complete game for the win. He allowed one run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Wallace went 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Whisenhunt went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jantzen Black paced ATU by going 2-for-4.
