Williams Sparks UWF in Game One Win over Brevard

March 5, 2007

Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Pitching and defense continues to be the key to success for 13th ranked West Florida (17-4). The Argonauts used that recipe in today's 2-1 win over Brevard College (11-7) in game one of Monday's double header. Bo Williams (Ocala, Fla./ Pensacola Junior College) knocked in both of UWF's runs, and starter Jordan Berry (Bradenton, Fla./ Central Florida C.C.) fanned 10 in six plus innings.

Williams stepped up big for the Argos in the bottom of the eighth by hammering a double to left with two outs scoring Daniel Jones (Wetumpka, Ala./ Gulf Coast C.C.) from second for the eventual game winning run. Jones singled, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Reed.

Williams put UWF on board in the bottom of the first on an RBI double to right center that scored Peter Antoske (Olmsted Township, Ohio/ St. Edawrds H.S.) from first base.

Brevard tied the game in the top of the third on a solo homerun by Brice Warner. Left fielder Jon Reed (Chesterfield, Va./ University of Virginia-Wise) went head-over-heals in his attempt to rob the Warner blast that just made it over his outstretched glove.

Berry went 6 2/3 innings for a no decision. He allowed one run on five hits, with four walks and 10 strikeouts. David Pedro (Miami, Fla./ Gulf Coast C.C.) relieved Berry in the seventh with two outs and runners on first and second. Pedro got out of the jam by forcing Justin Frady to ground out to second baseman Jones on the first pitch.

Pedro got the win (2-0) for UWF. He tossed 1 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit. Phil Lawhorn (Virginia Beach, Va./ Pensacola Junior College) notched his fifth save by retiring the side, including a pair of strikeouts. Both teams had six hits a piece.

Brevard starter Spencer Linn went all eight innings for the tornados in the tough loss. He allowed two runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked five.
