PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida (9-3) won their ninth straight in game one of today's double header with 29th ranked Quincy (0-3), 7-0. The Argonauts have won the first three of four games from the Hawks this weekend.
The Argos struck in the first inning on a Clay Wallace RBI single to left, scoring Peter Antoske from second base. Antoske singled and stole second to get into scoring position.
In the second inning, UWF scored twice on no hits, three walks and an error. Daniel Jones walked to lead off and later scored on a ground out by Jon Reed. An errant throw on a pick-off attempt by catcher Peter Russell sailed into left field allowing Lee Huggins to score.
The Argos added a pair of runs in the seventh on a two-run scoring single by Wallace. Reed scored from third, who double to right center to lead off the inning. Antoske scored from third, and walked to reach base.
West Florida continued to put pressure on the Hawks. They scored two runs in the eighth inning when Bo Williams doubled in the right field corner that scored Jason Kohl and Antoske. Kohl and Antoske both reached on walks by Quincy reliever Brad Shaeffer.
West Florida starting pitcher Brett McCullough (2-0) got the win. He allowed no runs on five through six complete innings. He walked two and struck out six. Jonathan Weaver pitched three innings of shutout relief to pick a save. He allowed no hits and a walk, while fanning four. Quincy starter Bryce Crowley (0-1) struggled through 3 1/3 innings for the loss. He allowed three runs, two earned on two hits with five walks and a strike out.
Wallace led UWF with three RBI. He went 2-for-4 at the plate. Williams was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Antoske was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Both teams left nine runners on base. The Argos took advantage of eight walks issued by QU pitchers.
