PENSACOLA, Fla. - Argos starting pitcher Jon Sintes kept his poise following a difficult start to game one of today's double header with SIAC school Stillman College (0-3). Sintes got stronger as the game progressed, and UWF (3-3) prevailed, 6-2.
A three-run eighth inning gave UWF a comfortable, 6-2 lead. Daniel Jones led off with a double to left field. Jon Reed singled on a bunt down the third baseline, and Jones advanced to third. Jones scored on a failed pick-off attempt when first baseman Josh Massey dropped the throw from Stillman reliever Michael Slezak. Reed was thrown out at third trying to stretch it out. With two outs, Clay Wallace blasted a two-run homer past the right field wall to give UWF a four-run lead.
Sintes (1-1) notched his first win of the season. He tossed seven complete innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Sintes struck out 10 and walked three. He got out of several close calls in the first two innings. West Florida pitching allowed just one hit after the second inning.
In the first inning, Michael Lewis tripled off Sintes to lead off the game. He was stranded at third when Sintes struck out the next three batters.
Stillman scored twice in the second inning on two hits. All three of Sintes's walks came in the second. David Holcombe led off with a walk and Garrett Gray followed with a single through the left side. Jack Hazelrig walked to load the bases with no outs. Holcombe was cut down at home on a fielder's choice ground out by Shannon Smith to Lee Huggins at third. Sintes walked Sean Blair forcing Gray home for the game's first run. Lewis put the Tigers on top, 2-0, with an RBI single to right field. Stillman left the bases loaded when Massey's ground ball forced Lewis out at second.
West Florida tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Bo Williams was hit by a pitch with one out, and advanced to third on Wallace's double to right. Williams scored on Jacob Whisenhunt's ground out. Wallace scored on Jason Kohl's double to left center.
The Argos took the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Reed that scored Jones. Jones singled with one out and stole second to get into scoring position.
Stillman starter Andrew Brown got the loss. He pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out one. West Florida relievers Brett McCullough and Phil Lawhorn retired the side in the eighth and ninth innings respectively. Lawhorn struck out the side in the ninth.
