Mike Jeffcoat comes into his third season as the head coach. Jeffcoat was promoted to head coach on August 8, 2005, and became the fourth head coach in the program's 27-year history. He took over for Jim Spooner who was the Argonauts skipper for 23 seasons. In two full seasons, Coach Jeffcoat has put together a record of 77-44, for a .636 winning percentage. In his second year as the Head Coach, Jeffcoat put together a phenomenal season by setting the school record with 43 wins, winning the school's first GSC title in Baseball, and earning a trip to the NCAA tournament for the first time. As a result, he was named by his peers as the GSC Coach of the Year for the 2007 season.
In his first year as the head coach, he led UWF to the Gulf South Conference Tournament Semifinal. West Florida's run at a GSC Championship was highlighted by a pair of wins over number one seeds and nationally ranked teams, Delta State (#21) and Montevallo (#11). Jeffcoat went 34-25 overall in his first year, and led UWF to their fourth consecutive GSC Tournament.
In all, Jeffcoat has spearheaded one of the elite pitching staffs in NCAA Division II, since joining the Argonaut coaching staff in 2001.He has coached the pitching staff to numerous individual and team accomplishments. Eighteen All-Conference awards have been earned by his pitchers, along with eight All-Region, four All-GSC Tournament, one GSC tournament MVP, three GSC Freshman of the Year's, one All- American, and one pitcher has been drafted into the Major Leagues. In 2003, Jeffcoat's pitching staff led the NCAA Division II in earned run average at 2.70. As the head coach in 2006, Jeffcoat placed six players on the All-Conference teams and two to the GSC All-Tournament team.
In 2007, his pitching staff was among the best in the GSC, and two pitchers (Brett McCullough and Phil Lawhorn) were first team All GSC. In addition, Jeffcoat had a pitcher (McCullough) named the GSC Tournament MVP, and then another pitcher (Jon Sintes) named to the All-Regional tornament team.
As a former player at West Florida, Jeffcoat is putting marks in the record book as a coach in addition to his playing accolades. His junior and senior years as a student-athlete at UWF were historic years for the baseball program. In 1990, the team gained 39 wins, and they earned 40 more in 1991, setting the UWF record for most wins. The record ironically, would stand until Jeffcoat would reset the mark as the Head coach in 2007. Jeffcoat set an individual record for all-time saves with nine, still standing at second today. He was also part of a pitching staff that led the Southern States Conference in ERA in 1991.
Before transferring to UWF, Jeffcoat pitched and played third base for two years at Chipola Junior College under head coach Bobby Pierce, now the head coach for NCAA Division I Troy University. Out of college, Jeffcoat was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, playing two years with the organization. Jeffcoat returned to school at UWF in 1993 and 1994 and served as a graduate assistant coach. With his guidance, the Argonauts reached post-season play each year and grabbed the last UWF Southern States Championship, in 1994. After graduation, he made a one-year stop at Pensacola Junior College as a pitching coach.
In 1995, Jeffcoat made his debut as a head coach at Alabama Southern Community College, where he spent five years and compiled a record of 107-138 (.437 percentage). In just his first year as a head coach, he took his team to a second place finish in the conference and a third place finish in the state tournament. He coached two First Team All-Americans, including Mitch Garner, who went on to play at UWF under head coach Jim Spooner. In addition, Jeffcoat led the way for several All-Region athletes. He received his Bachelor of Science in Sports Science from UWF in 1991 and a Master of Science in Sports Science from UWF in 1994. Jeffcoat is married to the former Ginger Tidwell and they have three children; Trent (8), Josef (3), and Jordan (6 months).
